Pakistan’s Trademark Boom: 3,000-Page Journals, Doubled Patent Grants and IP Training for Judges
“When the journal more than doubles in size, the opposition window matters more than ever.”

Record trademark journals. Issue No. 907, published on 25 September 2026, runs to 3,001 pages, up from 1,251 pages for the issue published in April. Applications accepted for advertisement rose from about 2,700 in March to more than 6,200 in each of August and September.

Filings and grants up. IPO-Pakistan’s own figures for January to September 2026 confirm the trend. Trademark applications rose 17% to 62,369, patent applications rose 24% to 910, and patent grants doubled from 90 to 185.

New DRAP–IPO MoU. On 12 October, IPO-Pakistan and DRAP signed an MoU to discourage trademarks based on the WHO’s generic drug names (INNs).

IP training for judges. Courts are being prepared for the rise. On 9 September, IPO-Pakistan and the Federal Judicial Academy agreed to run a joint training needs assessment, leading to specialised training for judges who hear IP cases, with international exposure through IPO-Pakistan’s global partners. Work on digital services and a National IP Strategy with WIPO is also under way.

What it means for brand owners. More published marks means more conflicts. Watch every journal and file oppositions within the deadline, before a confusing mark is registered.
